Reducing Food Waste

reducing food waste

One of Clean Works India primary objectives is reducing food waste. Clean Works India is an initiative of the Vivia Foundation, PopPack’s affiliate non-profit organization in the Netherlands.

There is great potential for increased revenues in the local economies in India and emerging growth nations which can be gained from year-round, profitable, efficient farm-centered harvesting and processing of food and beverage products.

Vivia is working on various projects to track and trace the interoperability of the sustainable supply chain to report on reducing food waste, reducing in energy use, logistical efficiencies, food quality and safety, consumer and small-holder farmer nutrition, social well-being, and positive economic outcomes.

Extended shelf life, improved nutrition, and expanded distribution of fresh produce, food and beverage products are driven by “smarter” flexible packaging solutions. Fresh products are packed utilizing more sustainable, efficient packaging solutions. Processing, packaging and product distribution systems are enhanced by localized, decentralized, self-sustaining rural facilities. Fresh produce and dried foods are packed and stored in hermetic bags with low-cost moisture sensing strips placed in each bag.

We are implementing solutions that will substantially reduce transport and distribution spoilage, especially for bulk food products throughout India.

Retail centers will incentivize consumers financially to recycle used packaging materials, which will be collected and reused in the supply chain.
