What is EasyPop® the Air-Powered Package®?
Award-winning design-tech
A simple packaging solution places a “design first” approach to achieving circularity and reaching sustainability goals. The invention is the PopPack’s EasyPop®, the Air-Powered Package®.
This is next generation packaging design technology originally developed in the Silicon Valley region of California, USA, which uses air in a bubble that “pops” to easily open flexible packages.
After a decade of R & D with major packaging machinery manufacturers, leading film companies, research consortium partners, brand owners, and consumer package testing, PopPack LLC and its EU affiliate, Vivia Ventures B.V. are leading development and commercialization for sustainable packaging with the “Air-Powered Package®.”
PopPack’s Air-Powered Package® introduces an air bubble to replace standard caps, fitments, tear strips and other typical packaging opening mechanisms.
When the air bubble is “popped” the seal of the package breaks open to create a functional, simple opening and reclosing solution. Less plastic is used, with much less material and resources waste. The EasyPop® package is a lighter weight and saves material and production costs.
EasyPop® is designed for lifestyle, enjoyment and brand appeal. PopPack’s on-the-go packages can be opened with only one hand.
The pop-open sound conveys a message to consumers that the package is tamper-evident, and the product inside is fresh, trusted and authentic. For brand loyalty, PopPack defines a new category of packaging with “delight and surprise” with an engaging consumer experience using the “power of air” with a “pop” of the EasyPop® bubble to break the package seal and then easily open a package.
The good news for brand owners and the packaging industry is that PopPack’s system can be made for many package shapes and sizes of flexible packaging – for both liquid and solid products, at commercial scale. After years of testing and development, PopPack selected packaging industry partners who are leading packaging machinery companies, licensed to make the PopPack packages for brand owners and product marketers.
PopPack’s EasyPop® packages can be adapted to many packaging types such as thermoformed trays, snack bags, stand up pouches, pillow pouches, stickpacks, and sachets.
For liquid products, PopPack developed a stand-up pouch without a cap or fitment, which does not spill after opening. For the beverage industry, PopPack designed a “pop-to-open” EasyPop® package combining a pour spout and a no-spill valve.
PopPack’s EasyPop® packages for liquids also have controlled dispensing, tamper-evidence and can be adjusted for a range of sizes from 100ml up to 2 liters. Packaging applications can be for single use or multi-use.
After years of design, testing and development, PopPack brings forth a market-ready opportunity to enhance the packaging experience for the consumer while greatly increasing sustainability and reducing plastic packaging waste.
Since the packages are designed to use only one polymer type, without ripping or tearing the film, the packages remain intact. Packages are therefore more cost-effective to collect, recycle, sort, re-purpose and upcycle.
Perell began working on the early technologies and proof of concept for PopPack over a decade ago. The designs have been refined, tested and are now commercial-ready. PopPack’s packaging machinery partners developed commercial-scale production to maintain line speeds with high quality, high precision production. Global packaging machinery affiliates Multivac, Pakona Engineers Pvt. Ltd., PPi Technologies Group, and Airofiller Equipment Solutions B.V., among others, are capable global experts with the engineering skills and expertise to customize packages incorporating PopPack’s EasyPop® system.
“We believe that ‘smarter packaging’ begins with a very positive and memorable experience for the customer,”
Our design approach places the customer first. Any customer, of any age, child or senior, can easily open PopPack packages. We design packages to be opened with only one hand, for on-the-go, busy lifestyles. Customers can put an opened beverage package in their pocket, purse or carry bag, without a concern about spilling the contents. There are no tear strips, caps or loose parts. Recycling, re-use or placing in a compost bin is easy and efficient.
“Sustainability and circularity must be inherently designed to be appealing, practical and affordable at every step of the supply chain. We are actively testing bio-based films and many improved film types so that our next generation packaging will lead the way for packaging which is truly designed for the circular economy.”
PopPack foresees positive growth in Asia, the EU, USA and South America in addition to other fast-emerging markets. Global development for EasyPop® has been in Scandinavia, Netherlands, USA, Japan and India. PopPack was awarded 1st place for packaging design and innovation in Sweden and Tokyo. There are plans underway to integrate new smart features, sensor, mobile and data intelligence with the EasyPop® bubble.
